The development of this regional strategy was what brought the Comox Valley Conservation Partnership together in 2008. Our “Nature Without Borders” vision for biodiversity conservation has been endorsed by all four local and regional governments, and has informed their Official Community Plans and strategies.
Regulations for the Protection and Restoration of Environmentally Sensitive Areas
The Comox Valley Conservation Partnership developed this document to guide local governments in developing effective Environmental Development Permit Area regulations to guide development away from environmentally sensitive areas, in order to protect ecosystems and restore and connect them over time.
An inventory of Southern Vancouver Island Sensitive Ecosystems was conducted beginning in the 1990s, to map the remaining natural rare, threatened and important ecosystem types and report the impact of human activities on them. This inventory was updated in 2002 and again in 2014. The results show a continuing loss and disturbance of these ecosystems, which in 2014 covered only 5% of the landscape.
