Project Description

MORRISON CREEK HEADWATERS NATURE PRESERVE

Our opportunity is to buy 289 hectares (714 acres) in the headwaters of the Morrison Creek watershed. This undeveloped wilderness oasis nestled between the Village of Cumberland and the City of Courtenay is home to four species of salmon, two species of trout, and wide-ranging mammals including large carnivores. Its mature forest encompasses many groundwater-fed wetlands, springs and small creeks, providing year-round cool water for the most productive small salmon stream on south-eastern Vancouver Island. Morrison Creek is also known for being the only home on Earth to the endangered Morrison Creek Lamprey.

Purchasing this property will protect it from logging and urban development forever. This purchase is additional to the smaller (22 hectare) parcel we acquired in 2019 together with the Comox Valley Regional District in what is now known as qax mot Conservation Area.
