CCFS Science Pub Explores Forest Fire Ecology and the Poetics of Climate Change
This special Science Pub event is being presented in partnership with Cascadia Poetics Lab Society as part of the Cascadia Poetry Festival 2019 – Poetry in a Time of Climate Crises. Nature’s Phoenix features Climate Scientist Dominick DellSala and Poet Sonnet L’Abbe.
Dr. Dominick A. DellaSala is President and Chief Scientist of the Geos Institute in Ashland. He is an internationally renowned author on forest and fire ecology, conservation biology, endangered species management, and landscape ecology. Dominick has given keynote talks to the United Nations Earth Summit and has appeared in National Geographic, Science Digest, Science Magazine, Scientific American, Time Magazine, Audubon Magazine, National Wildlife Magazine, NY Times, LA Times, USA Today, Jim Lehrer News Hour, CNN, MSNBC, “Living on Earth (NPR),” several PBS documentaries and even Fox News! His book “Temperate and Boreal Rainforests of the World: Ecology and Conservation” received an academic excellence award in 2012 from Choice magazine. His recent book– The Ecological Importance of Mixed-Severity Fires: Nature’s Phoenix – presents groundbreaking science on the ecological importance of large fires.
Sonnet L’Abbé is a Canadian poet and critic. As a poet, L’Abbé writes about national identity, race, gender and language. She has been shortlisted for the 2010 CBC Literary Award for poetry and has won the Bronwen Wallace Memorial Award for most promising writer under 35. As a critic, she is a regular reviewer of fiction and poetry for The Globe and Mail and has written scholarly articles on Canadian contemporary poetry.
This special CCFS Science Pub will also feature touch and taste samples, on-theme beverages, live screen printing, music and more! The CCFS Science Pub series is dedicated to bringing together subject experts with artists, poets, and thinkers to explore topics ranging from biology and evolution to climate resilience and the natural environment. Funds raised support research, education and restoration projects of the CCFS.
Admission is $15 and tickets are available in advance for this event and a sold out event is expected. Doors open at 630 pm with presentations starting at 700.
