I attended the Comox OCP Open House on the 8th of December at D'Esterre House and was quite pleased with the direction being taken by Comox Council and planners.
Over 300 letters have been recieved regarding the communities desire to see the Northeast Woods kept as a park with only section "A" being considered at all for development. This is largely a brownfield site as it was an active gravel pit for many years. A tremendous contingent of students from Highland School were present and presented their petition directly to Mayor Ives.
We wish Mayor Ives all success in negotiating this with the Province and will be providing a letter of support to Mayor and Council that supports this area as a permanent park. We see the recreational connection with the community as essential to the health of the region, the area acts as a sponge that slows delivery of precious rain water into the Lazo Marsh and Queen's Ditch and, of course, meeting ghreenhouse gas emission targets will require the retention and restoration of the urban forest as an essential carbon sink...
